I started my working life as a bowser boy in my Dad’s BP service Station in Wentworthville. I used to say, in a broad Australian accent, “How ya goin’ mate? Yeah. Fillerup? No problem. Check yer oil? Yeah, alright.”
Then I went to acting school.
“Do you intend getting work as an actor?”
“Yeah, well of course,” I said.
“Have you thought about your voice?”
“Oh, yeah, yeah…… No, not really.”
“Well, it’s the worst voice we’ve ever heard, and if you are intent on getting any work as an actor, improve your voice or get out.”
And they did throw a lot of people out. We started with 23 and three years later we ended up with about 13.
People say, “You need to be a born speaker, mate!” and they come up with all these excuses. But it’s not the case and I’m standing here as a prime example of a person who could not speak at all, who had terrible communication skills. I used to talk to the floor. I would never look people in the eye and I had a very rough nasal accent.
When I learned the acting skills I went, “wow!”
I thought, “This stuff really works. This is fantastic. Everybody should know this stuff that actors study”.
Every time I talk to someone I reap the benefits of that acting training.
